All Wheel Drive Bicycle

without Chain or Cable Mechanism

This all wheel drive bicycle has no chain or cable mechanism and it works with an enclosed gear train system, much like a contemporary AWD automobile. It maintains a similar frame structure as a conventional bicycle as shown in the picture below.

Most conventional bicycles with a chain mechanism have numerous short falls such as:

  • frequent derailing and need for adjustment,
  • difficulty in shifting the chain to get a front and rear sprocket combination,
  • a chain system vulnerable to getting jammed with dirt and road debris, leading to reduced efficiency and frequent cleaning,
  • loss of traction on slippery surfaces,
  • oily and dirty chain ring makes rider’s pants dirty and can entangle with pant hem, etc.

The all wheel drive bicycle without a chain or cable system can eliminate all the above mentioned problems. This all wheel drive bicycle maintains a similar frame structure and wheel arrangement to a conventional bicycle and offers a similar riding experience to a conventional bicycle while providing many advantages such as:

  • all gear trains are completely enclosed in the frame and covered, thus being protected from dirt, and requiring less maintenance,
  • the all wheel drive mechanism provides better traction on slippery road surfaces such as snow, ice, sand, mud and up-hill riding in general,
  • no frequent adjustment and maintenance required,
  • the multi-speed transmission is easy to switch to select a speed, like an automobile gear shift.

In summary, the all wheel drive bicycle will be a trouble free, all-weather/all-season bicycle, and provide a better way of local transportation for the general public.

In future development, the gear train system can accommodate a motorizing mechanism as well as an electric motor and battery system add-on, by means of modifying the main gear train. The motorized gear bicycle will provide easy, fast and convenient community transportation, and can be used for mail delivery and police patrols in narrow streets.
